The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has announced the arrest of a 70-year-old man for allegedly vandalising a government infrastructure project in Lekki Phase 1.

According to the commissioner's statement shared on his official X account on Sunday, the suspect, identified as Kayode Otitoju, was caught in the act of dismantling sections of a perimeter fence being constructed by the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources along the canal setback in the area.

Wahab condemned the incident as an act of "sabotage against Lagosians," emphasizing that the fencing initiative is part of the state's comprehensive strategy to prevent encroachment, mitigate environmental hazards, and reduce flooding risks in the metropolis.

Infrastructure Protection Measures

"This infrastructure protects lives and property. Sabotaging it is sabotage against Lagosians," the commissioner stated firmly in his announcement.

The Lagos State government has been implementing various measures to protect canal setbacks and prevent illegal structures that often contribute to flooding during rainy seasons. The perimeter fencing project represents one of several initiatives aimed at safeguarding critical drainage infrastructure across the state.

Wahab further confirmed that the suspect would face prosecution in accordance with the law, reaffirming the government's determination to protect public infrastructure and penalize deliberate acts of destruction.

As of the time of reporting, authorities have not released additional information regarding the specific charges or when the suspect will be arraigned in court.

This incident comes amid ongoing concerns about infrastructure vandalism in Lagos, which continues to pose challenges to urban development and environmental management efforts in Nigeria's commercial capital.
