The Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai, Major General AE Abubakar, has revealed that terrorist groups operating in Nigeria's North-East region have advanced their tactical capabilities by deploying armed drones in their attacks.

Speaking during a press briefing on the state of counter-insurgency operations, General Abubakar disclosed that this concerning development was first observed in November last year.

"Since November of last year, we noticed the introduction of the use of armed drones to carry out attacks," the commander stated, drawing parallels to similar technology deployed in conflict zones like Ukraine and Israel.

According to General Abubakar, these drones pose a significant challenge to military defenses as they are difficult to detect using conventional radar systems. This technological advancement demonstrates the insurgents' increasing adaptability in their operations.

The commander attributed this evolution in terrorist tactics to regional instability across the Sahel, where widespread looting of military barracks has facilitated the illegal entry of sophisticated weaponry into Nigeria.

"The weapons find their way down into Nigeria due to our large and porous borders," he explained.

Military Response and Strategy Adjustments

In response to these evolving threats, the Nigerian military has initiated significant operational changes, including a comprehensive review of troop deployments and enhanced surveillance measures.

"In the last two months, we have been re-strategizing and reorganizing. The Chief of Army Staff was here just a week ago, and several changes have been made in the theatre," Abubakar revealed.

While acknowledging recent attacks in Rann, Gajiram, and Dikwa, the commander reported that all but one were successfully repelled. The attack in Rann resulted in the loss of four soldiers.

Despite these challenges, General Abubakar emphasized the military's unwavering resolve in the fight against terrorism. "Our troops are highly motivated, and our resilience is not dampened. In time, we will completely defeat terrorism," he assured.

Call for National Support

The commander issued a stern warning to terrorists operating in the North-East, urging them to surrender like some of their former comrades who have been treated humanely, or face elimination.

General Abubakar also emphasized that national security is a collective responsibility, not solely the duty of uniformed personnel. He called on all Nigerians to actively support military efforts by providing intelligence and helping to identify and isolate criminal elements within their communities.

"Nigerians must continue to assist the military in fishing out the bad elements," he concluded, underscoring the importance of civilian cooperation in the ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
