The Home-based Super Eagles concluded their 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign on a positive note, securing a 2-0 victory over Congo in their final group stage match on Monday.

Despite both teams creating scoring opportunities in the first half, the match remained goalless at the break. The deadlock was finally broken in the 56th minute when Anas Yusuf, the top scorer in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), netted Nigeria's first goal of the tournament.

Congo's hopes of mounting a comeback were dealt a severe blow in the 90th minute when Charles Konde received a red card for a reckless challenge. Taking advantage of the numerical superiority, Sikiru Alimi doubled Nigeria's lead during stoppage time, sealing the 2-0 victory.

The win came too late for the Eagles, who had already been eliminated from the tournament after losing their opening two matches against Senegal and Sudan. Coach Eric Chelle's side finished third in Group D with three points from three games.

Congo also exited the competition following this defeat, while Senegal and Sudan played to a goalless draw in the other Group D fixture, both advancing to the next round.

Prior to the match, Coach Chelle had emphasized that the team would be playing for pride against Congo, a sentiment that was clearly reflected in their improved performance.

The victory, though consolatory, provides a positive note for the Home Eagles to build upon as they look toward future competitions.
