Maduka Okoye has declared his readiness to battle for the Super Eagles' number one goalkeeping position following his impressive performance in Nigeria's recent 1-1 draw with Russia.
The 25-year-old Udinese shot-stopper, who was once Nigeria's first-choice goalkeeper during Gernot Rohr's tenure as head coach, is looking to reclaim his position after falling down the pecking order in recent years.
Career Revival at Udinese
Okoye's journey with the national team has been tumultuous. After a disappointing showing at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon, coupled with a difficult spell at Watford, the goalkeeper found himself excluded from national team call-ups for a significant period.
However, his career has experienced a resurgence since joining Serie A side Udinese, where his performances have earned him a recall to the Super Eagles squad.
Respect for Nwabali
Speaking to Flashscore after the Russia friendly, Okoye acknowledged the contributions of current first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali while expressing his ambition to compete for the position.
"Of course, we know what Nwabali has done for our country. He's a very good goalkeeper and I think he deserves it because I never got to the level I have with the Super Eagles," Okoye stated.
"So, I really hope that I get to my level and he deserves to play right now, but I think there are always going to be some chances and opportunities, and I just have to be ready when they're coming," he added.
Impressive Display Against Russia
Okoye's stellar performance in the 1-1 draw against Russia on Friday night has reignited discussions about Nigeria's goalkeeping hierarchy. The match, which reportedly broke Russia's six-year attendance record, saw the Super Eagles put up a competitive display with Okoye making several crucial saves.
The friendly also marked Taofeek Arokodare's maiden goal for the Super Eagles, while Olusegun celebrated his first appearance for the national team.
