Former National Vice Chairman (North-West) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Salihu Lukman, has vowed that Nigerians would use their democratic power to remove President Bola Tinubu in the forthcoming 2027 general elections, citing worsening economic conditions and failed leadership.

Lukman made this declaration on Wednesday while appearing as a guest on 'News Day', a programme on Arise Television. Speaking as one of the promoters of the opposition coalition now operating under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), he expressed disappointment in the current administration.

"To that extent, therefore, as far as I'm concerned, we will exert our democratic rights to get him out of the place, but that will not in any way jeopardise any negotiation to protect issues of equity, inclusivity and what have you," he stated.

The former APC chieftain revealed that he had previously supported and campaigned for President Tinubu when he was still a member of the ruling party. However, he lamented that the President has failed to address the harsh realities of living conditions faced by Nigerians.

Lukman resigned from the APC in June 2024, citing internal crisis and the failure of the party's leadership to implement necessary reforms. Since then, he has aligned with the ADC, where he recently cautioned the Senator David Mark-led national leadership against god-fatherism and imposition among leaders at all levels.

This development comes amid growing dissatisfaction with the current administration's economic policies and their impact on the average Nigerian. Political analysts suggest that Lukman's move represents a growing trend of former APC stalwarts distancing themselves from the party ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.

The 2027 presidential election is expected to be highly competitive, with various opposition figures already positioning themselves as alternatives to the incumbent. Lukman's declaration adds to the mounting pressure on President Tinubu's administration to address economic challenges and governance issues before the next electoral cycle.
