Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, has publicly endorsed the opposition coalition's adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as a positive development for Nigeria's democratic landscape.
Speaking to journalists after casting his vote during the Lagos State local government elections in Surulere on Saturday, Gbajabiamila emphasized the importance of maintaining a robust opposition in Nigeria's political system.
"It's a welcome development with the coalition. It's not the first time we are seeing this. It's a welcome development. In every democracy, we must have some level of opposition otherwise we'll run into a one-party state. But I'm not sure where it would go," he stated.
The opposition coalition formally adopted the ADC as their platform earlier this month during a gathering at the Yar'Adua Centre in Abuja. The event marked a significant moment in Nigerian politics as Ralph Nwosu handed over the party's membership card to David Mark, who was introduced as the interim national chairman, while Rauf Aregbesola was named national secretary.
This coalition represents a strategic alliance aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 general elections. Political analysts view this consolidation as a potential game-changer in Nigeria's increasingly polarized political landscape.
Gbajabiamila's comments are particularly noteworthy given his position as a key figure in President Tinubu's administration. His acknowledgment of the opposition's importance highlights the administration's commitment to democratic principles, even as it prepares to face heightened political competition.
The ADC coalition has attracted significant attention in recent weeks, with reports indicating that prominent political figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi may be involved in the alliance.
