Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in the United Kingdom to oversee the repatriation of former President Muhammadu Buhari's remains to Nigeria for burial according to Islamic rites.
Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President's media aide, confirmed early Monday morning that Shettima was received at the hospital by Ambassador Yusuff Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
According to presidential sources, the Vice President departed Nigeria around midnight on Sunday. His arrival in London was witnessed by Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum and Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President.
Former President Buhari passed away on Sunday after being hospitalized in the UK for a prolonged illness. Before his death, he had battled undisclosed ailments for years, including during his two terms as Nigeria's President.
The former President's remains are expected to arrive in Nigeria today, where final burial rites will be conducted according to Islamic tradition.
In response to the former President's passing, the National Assembly has suspended its activities. Former President Goodluck Jonathan has also expressed his condolences, describing Buhari as "courageous, selfless, and patriotic."
Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, mourned Buhari's passing, revealing that the former President was his mentor and instrumental in his becoming the governor of Kaduna State.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, described Buhari's death as a lesson to those in power, while former House of Representatives member Patricia Etteh noted that Buhari "remained steadfast despite divergent views on his policies."
