President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a seven-day national mourning period following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

In his official condolence message, President Tinubu directed that all national flags across Nigeria fly at half-mast for seven days starting Sunday as a mark of respect for the former leader.

"I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today," President Tinubu stated in the announcement.

The President has also summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council session scheduled for Tuesday, which will be dedicated to honoring the late Buhari. Additionally, the federal government will accord the former president full state honors in recognition of his contributions to Nigeria.

"The federal government will accord President Buhari full state honours befitting his towering contributions to our country," the statement further read.

According to reports, the former president is expected to be laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, on Monday. The death was confirmed by his former spokespersons, Garba Shehu and Bashir Ahmed, in separate statements released on Sunday.

In a related development, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to travel to London to accompany the remains of the former president back to Nigeria.

The news of Buhari's passing has prompted condolences from various political figures and groups across the country, including the Northern Governors Forum, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, and the Progressive Governors Forum, all expressing their grief over the loss of the former leader.
