Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has expressed profound grief over the passing of Nigeria's former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Saturday in London after a prolonged illness at the age of 83.
In a heartfelt condolence message released through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, Governor Mohammed described Buhari's death as a monumental national loss, emphasizing that the late leader was a symbol of integrity, discipline, and unwavering patriotism.
"The news of the former President's passing has plunged the nation into mourning," the statement read. "President Muhammadu Buhari was a statesman of uncommon integrity, discipline, and simplicity."
Speaking on behalf of his family, the government, and the people of Bauchi State, Governor Mohammed lauded Buhari's decades of public service, first as Nigeria's military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, and later as a two-term democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.
The governor highlighted that Buhari's leadership was characterized by a determined anti-corruption campaign, significant infrastructural development, agricultural reforms, and economic repositioning efforts.
"His legacy is indelible," Mohammed stated. "His efforts to stabilize Nigeria and promote democratic values, especially during challenging times, will not be forgotten."
Reflecting on his personal relationship with the late President, Governor Mohammed described Buhari as a "patriotic elder statesman, firm in his convictions, calm in demeanour, yet unwavering in his commitment to national unity and good governance."
The governor emphasized Buhari's humble lifestyle and commitment to transparency as qualities that current and future leaders should emulate. "His stoic demeanour and ability to maintain personal discipline even at the height of political power are attributes worthy of emulation," he added.
Governor Mohammed noted that the people of Bauchi State share a special connection with the former President and will always cherish his memory. "His passing is not just a loss to his immediate family or Katsina State, but a monumental loss to the entire nation and the African continent," he said.
While mourning the late leader, the governor called on Nigerians to celebrate Buhari's legacy and continue pursuing the values of justice, unity, and equity that he stood for. He prayed for Allah's mercy upon Buhari's soul and for him to be granted Aljannatul Firdaus.
Governor Mohammed extended his condolences to the Buhari family, the people and Government of Katsina State, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the National Council of State, and Nigerians worldwide.
