A coalition of opposition parties in Gombe State has officially adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their platform to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming 2027 general elections.

The coalition, comprising members from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Labour Party (LP), some APC defectors, and ADC, was inaugurated in Gombe on Tuesday with the stated aim of rescuing the state from economic hardship.

Former Minister of Transportation, Mr. Idris Umar, who led the inauguration ceremony, emphasized that the coalition's primary objective extends beyond merely gaining political power.

"We are unveiling this partnership in Gombe, built on mutual respect and a shared commitment to put Nigeria first," Umar said. "Our coalition was not created to grab power, but to promote good governance and improve the standard of living for residents of Gombe State."

According to the former minister, the decision to adopt ADC followed 18 months of extensive dialogue with political stakeholders across various opposition parties, aligning with a national coalition movement.

"We are determined to recruit new members and work closely with ADC leadership in Gombe to ensure the party's success," he added.

To drive membership expansion, the coalition has established a committee chaired by former Gombe deputy governor, Mr. John Yoriyo, with Shehu Adamu-Fura serving as his assistant. This committee will spearhead registration efforts aimed at strengthening the party's position ahead of the 2027 elections.

"We will strengthen the party and open our doors to more members ready to rescue Gombe and Nigeria from present challenges," Umar stated.

Umar, who previously represented Gombe Central in the Senate, highlighted the crucial role of opposition in a functioning democracy, noting that without effective opposition, national progress would be impossible. He emphasized that coalition efforts are essential to lifting Nigerians from poverty and securing a brighter future.

"Our focus is to move Nigeria forward, ease citizens' lives, raise living standards and restore national security," he explained.

The former minister also used the occasion to urge youths to shun violence and political thuggery, stressing that the coalition promotes peace and democratic advancement rather than discord.

In his address at the event, ADC state chairman Auwal Barde commended members for their commitment and called for unity to ensure the party's success in Gombe come 2027.
