Jigawa State's former Deputy Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Mahmud Gumel, has officially emerged as the new State Coordinator of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), establishing the party as a formidable opposition force ahead of Nigeria's 2027 general elections.
The leadership transition was formalized during a public ceremony where the incumbent state executives, led by Hon. Kabiru Hussaini, voluntarily stepped aside to make way for the coalition-backed leadership team.
In a significant move signaling unity and restructuring, the outgoing executives announced the dissolution of all ADC structures across Jigawa's 27 local government areas.
"This bold move was made to pave the way for the successful takeover of the leadership of the party, as well as its structures, by the new members of the coalition led by the new state coordinator," Hussaini explained after relinquishing his position.
A New Political Direction
Gumel articulated the ADC's mission to provide Nigerians—particularly those dissatisfied with the current Tinubu administration—a credible political alternative.
"We call on Jigawa State people and all Nigerians to join hands with the party to create a better future for the country," he stated during his inaugural address.
The former deputy governor described the coalition's rapid expansion as evidence of widespread desire for fresh political leadership. "The party's leadership has welcomed these coalition developments, emphasising its commitment to building a robust and inclusive democratic process," he added.
While expressing optimism about the party's prospects, Gumel urged restraint and civility among party members. "We appeal to our members to avoid insults or attacks on leaders, whether in office or not. That's not who we are, and it's not the goal of this coalition. We're here to build—not to bicker," he cautioned.
Youth Engagement and Future Prospects
Gumel specifically addressed Nigerian youth, encouraging them to remain hopeful and politically engaged. "We assure you that we are ready to continue doing the needful to bring about positive change in our country," he said, calling for prayers and support from all segments of society.
The emergence of this coalition represents a significant development in Nigeria's political landscape as opposition forces begin positioning themselves for the 2027 electoral contest.
