A man narrowly escaped death in Lagos after a container-laden truck crushed his Toyota Sienna minivan in the early hours of Saturday. The incident occurred around 1:30 am along the Ikorodu Road corridor at Idi-Iroko.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident involved a 40-foot Mack truck loaded with goods and a white Toyota Sienna minivan with registration number LSR 267 GZ.

Brake Failure Leads to Accident

LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, revealed that preliminary investigations suggest the truck suffered a brake failure while reportedly traveling at excessive speed. This caused the container it carried to detach and collapse onto the minivan.

"Our midnight surveillance and emergency response team promptly arrived at the scene following distress calls," Taofiq stated. The operatives successfully rescued the occupant from the crushed vehicle, who then received immediate medical attention from the Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS).

Driver Flees Scene

Reports indicate that the truck driver fled the scene shortly after the incident, allegedly to avoid possible mob action or legal consequences. This has complicated initial investigation efforts.

While recovery efforts continued, the damaged Sienna minivan was towed to the Anthony Police Station for documentation. Both the truck and its detached container were taken to LASTMA's operational base for further investigation.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in Lagos, particularly regarding heavy-duty vehicles and their maintenance standards. The Lagos State government has repeatedly emphasized the need for truck owners to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before plying the roads.
