Two motorcyclists have lost their lives and three others sustained severe injuries in a tragic road accident that occurred along the Mile 2 section of Aiyetoro-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State on Saturday.

The accident involved a Toyota Camry with registration number BDG 260 JP and two TVS motorcycles registered as LAR 880 VM and AAB 408 VX respectively.

According to reports, the incident occurred when the driver of the Toyota Camry attempted to overtake a vehicle without considering oncoming traffic, resulting in a head-on collision with the two motorcycles.

Seni Ogunyemi, Commandant General of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, confirmed the incident on Monday in a traffic update. He attributed the cause of the accident to wrongful overtaking and excessive speeding.

"According to an eyewitness, reckless driving coupled with excessive speeding on the part of the Toyota Camry driver who overtook a vehicle in front of him without considering the incoming traffic, led to a head-on collision with two motorcycles," Ogunyemi stated.

The accident involved seven male adults in total. Two died at the scene, three sustained severe injuries, while two others escaped unhurt.

Ogunyemi further disclosed that the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the State Hospital Morgue in Ijaiye, Abeokuta, while the injured victims are currently receiving treatment at the same hospital.

This incident highlights the ongoing concerns about road safety on Nigerian highways, particularly regarding speeding and dangerous overtaking maneuvers that continue to claim lives across the country.
