Abakaliki FC players have received a handsome reward of N1 million each from Ebonyi State Governor Nwifuru Francis following their impressive performance in the 2025 President Federation Cup.

The governor presented the cash gifts during a reception held for the team in Abakaliki on Monday, celebrating their achievement as runners-up in the prestigious tournament.

Impressive Cup Run

The Ebonyi State-based club put up a remarkable showing throughout the tournament, defeating several Nigerian football powerhouses including Enyimba, Nasarawa United, Katsina United, and Ikorodu City on their way to the final.

Their cup journey came to a heartbreaking end in Lagos last Saturday when they lost 4-3 on penalties to Kwara United after a goalless draw in regulation time.

Despite falling short of the title, the team's performance earned them a cash prize of N20 million from tournament organizers for reaching the final.

Contrasting Rewards

In contrast, champions Kwara United received more substantial rewards, with each player getting N5 million and plots of land from their state government. The Ilorin-based team also held a trophy parade in their hometown to celebrate their first-ever President Federation Cup title.

In the women's category, Rivers Angels successfully defended their title by defeating Nasarawa Amazons.

The recognition of Abakaliki FC's achievement highlights the growing competitiveness of football clubs from different regions of Nigeria and the importance of state government support for sports development.
