Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau has heaped praise on Abakaliki FC for their exceptional journey to the final of this season's President Federation Cup, where they will face Kwara United on Saturday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.
The Rice Boys have defied expectations by eliminating several Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) powerhouses including Katsina United, Ikorodu City, and Enyimba en route to the final showdown.
"In the history of the FA Cup, NNL clubs have proven their worth, and Abakaliki FC's presence in this year's final is a testament to their quality," Gusau stated, acknowledging the team's remarkable achievement as a second-tier club.
CAF Confederation Cup Spot at Stake
The stakes are high for Saturday's final, as the winner will secure Nigeria's representative spot in the prestigious CAF Confederation Cup next season. This adds significant weight to what is already a historic occasion for Abakaliki FC.
Both teams have arrived in Lagos ahead of the final, with Abakaliki FC's head coach Onyedikachi expressing confidence in his team's ability to overcome Kwara United. Meanwhile, Kwara United's coach Sanni has cautioned his team against underestimating their lower-division opponents.
El-Kanemi Warriors are the defending champions of the competition, having defeated Abia Warriors 2-0 in last year's final.
The President Federation Cup, Nigeria's oldest football competition, continues to showcase the depth of talent across different tiers of Nigerian football, with Abakaliki FC's run highlighting the competitive nature of the tournament regardless of league status.
