The political tension between Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, appears to have come to an end following a surprise visit by the governor to Akume's residence in Abuja.

The reconciliation marks a significant turning point in Benue politics, as the relationship between the two APC stalwarts had deteriorated shortly after the 2023 elections, reportedly over control of the party's state structure.

How the Reconciliation Unfolded

The peace process began during President Bola Tinubu's recent visit to Benue State following the tragic massacre in Yelwata, where over 200 residents lost their lives. Akume, who was also present in the state during this period, met with traditional rulers who advocated for peace across Benue.

Governor Alia confirmed the reconciliation through his official Facebook page on Wednesday, revealing that he had paid a surprise visit to Akume at his Maitama residence in Abuja.

"Today, I paid a surprise visit to Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), at his Maitama residence in Abuja," Alia wrote.

"It was a warm and insightful interaction marked by mutual respect, unity, and deep reflection on both state and national issues, as well as a shared commitment to the progress of our dear state and nation," the governor added.

Background of the Political Rift

BenriNews reports that the fallout between Governor Alia and Akume, who is considered his political godfather, occurred just months after the 2023 elections. The disagreement reportedly centered on who would control the All Progressives Congress (APC) structure in Benue State, leading to a significant split within the party.

Political analysts suggest that this reconciliation could strengthen the APC in Benue and potentially improve governance in the state, as both leaders can now focus on development rather than internal party conflicts.

The reunion comes at a critical time for Benue State, which has been grappling with security challenges, including the recent deadly attacks in Yelwata that drew national attention and prompted President Tinubu's visit.
