The Benue State Commissioner of Police, Emenari Ifeanyi, has confirmed that security personnel stationed in Yelewata community successfully neutralized two bandits involved in the recent deadly attack in Guma Local Government Area of the state.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, CP Ifeanyi provided updates on the security situation following the attack and outlined measures being implemented to protect lives and property in the region.
Suspect Arrested, Providing Information
According to the Commissioner, one of the bandits who participated in the attack has been apprehended and is "giving the police useful information." However, authorities have not disclosed the identity of the arrested suspect.
While local sources reported that over 200 people were killed in the Yelewata attack, CP Ifeanyi put the official death toll at 47.
Security Reinforcements Deployed
The Commissioner explained that the bandits had attempted to overrun Yelewata but were thwarted by the swift response of Police Tactical Teams and other security agents in the area.
"Yelewata is now safe," CP Ifeanyi assured, adding that the Inspector General of Police has deployed additional personnel to troubled areas and locations vulnerable to attacks.
The Commissioner gave assurances that his command, in collaboration with sister security agencies, remains vigilant and committed to preventing similar incidents in the future.
This attack comes amid growing concerns about insecurity in Benue State, particularly in border communities that have experienced repeated incidents of violence in recent years.
