A farmer identified as Alphonsis Iorbe was reportedly killed by suspected armed herders on Tuesday while working on his farm in Tse-Kanji, a community in Ayilamo, Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.

According to reports, the attack occurred around 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, marking another deadly incident in the ongoing farmer-herder tensions that have plagued the region.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama confirmed the incident in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, stating that security operatives were swiftly deployed to the area following a distress call.

"The farmer's body was later recovered, photographed for record purposes, and moved to the Ayilamo Mortuary, where it is expected to undergo a post-mortem examination," Makama wrote.

Security Response and Investigation

Personnel from the Nigerian Army, alongside police officers and other security agents, responded promptly to the scene following reports of the attack.

Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. These efforts are part of broader measures to prevent further violence in the troubled region, which has seen recurring clashes between farming communities and herders.

Persistent Conflict in Benue State

Benue remains one of the states most severely affected by farmer-herder conflicts in Nigeria. These clashes continue to claim lives, displace communities, and disrupt agricultural activities, which form the backbone of the state's economy.

The persistent nature of these conflicts has raised concerns about food security and social stability in the region, with calls for more effective interventions from both state and federal authorities.

This latest incident adds to the growing list of violent encounters that have characterized the relationship between farming communities and herders in Benue State over the past decade.
