Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has begun stakeholder consultations following President Bola Tinubu's directive during his recent visit to Benue State in the aftermath of the Yelewata attack.

Akume met with Benue's paramount traditional rulers – the Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty, Orchivirigh Prof. James Ayatse, and the Och'Idoma, His Royal Majesty, Agabaidu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John – on Saturday as part of ongoing efforts to restore peace and security in the state.

Presidential Mandate for Peace

During his visit to Benue, President Tinubu had directed the SGF to lead a strategic peace committee aimed at addressing the root causes of violence in the state and developing a roadmap for lasting reconciliation and stability.

Akume, who hails from Benue State, described the recent Yelewata incident as "heartbreaking" and emphasized the President's determination to end the senseless killings in what is known as the food basket of the nation.

"We want to appeal to you to continue to stay vigilant so that miscreants do not infiltrate the communities. Whenever you observe a breach, do not resist in informing us. The President will never disappoint you," the SGF stated.

Traditional Rulers' Role in Peace Process

The inclusion of the Tor Tiv and Och'Idoma in the peace process reflects the Tinubu administration's recognition of the crucial role traditional institutions play in conflict resolution, community dialogue, and peacebuilding efforts.

Both monarchs expressed appreciation for President Tinubu's personal visit to the state and assured the Federal Government of their full support and commitment to the peace initiatives.

This consultation marks the beginning of a broader engagement strategy as directed by the President to address the security challenges in Benue State.
