The Benue State Police Command has officially refuted viral social media reports claiming a herdsmen attack occurred in Wannune, Tarka Local Government Area of the state. According to authorities, no such attack took place, and the circulating claims are both misleading and false.

In a statement released by Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, the command clarified that the incident in question was an isolated shooting carried out by an ex-convict, not related to any herdsmen activity as widely reported.

Details of the Actual Incident

According to police reports, at approximately 8:00 p.m. on June 21, 2025, authorities received a distress call reporting that one Aondoakaa Yayough had been shot dead along Akume Road in Wannune. Police detectives were immediately dispatched to the scene to investigate.

Preliminary investigations and eyewitness accounts identified the shooter as Saater Aii, an ex-convict. Though local security operatives initially apprehended the suspect, he managed to escape custody.

Two additional individuals sustained gunshot injuries during the incident and were rushed to a hospital for medical treatment. An AK-47 rifle used in the attack was recovered at the scene.

"There was no report of herdsmen in Wannune," DSP Edet emphasized in the statement, urging the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and to rely only on official and credible sources for updates.

Ongoing Investigation

Police detectives are currently working to track down and arrest the suspect who remains at large. The command has assured the public that efforts are being intensified to bring the perpetrator to justice.

This clarification comes amid heightened tensions in Benue State, which has experienced farmer-herder conflicts in the past. The police statement aims to prevent potential escalation based on misinformation.

The command has reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the state, calling on residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through official channels rather than resorting to speculation on social media.
