The Maritime component of Operation Hadin Kai has successfully repelled an attempted infiltration by suspected Boko Haram terrorists on the Lake Chad Naval Base located at Fish Dam in Baga, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack, which occurred around 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, was reportedly aimed at sabotaging the Swamp Boggeys recently procured by the Borno State Government to support waterways clearance operations in the Lake Chad region.
According to counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, who shared details of the incident on his X handle, naval troops swiftly responded to the incursion, engaging the insurgents in a heavy gunfight that lasted over two hours before the terrorists were forced to retreat.
Swift Military Response
Naval personnel at the base held their ground as reinforcements arrived from nearby Baga. "Although the base resisted the incursion, minimal damage was recorded. An ambulance and two other vehicles were destroyed, while some personnel sustained injuries during the engagement," a source quoted by Makama disclosed.
Importantly, the Swamp Boggeys, which appeared to be the primary target of the attack, remained secure and untouched by the attackers. These specialized vehicles are crucial for operations in the difficult terrain of Lake Chad.
The Air Component Command (ACC) of Operation Hadin Kai is currently conducting follow-on pursuit and exploitation operations along the Lake Chad waterways in a bid to track down and neutralize the fleeing terrorists.
Strategic Importance
This attack highlights the ongoing security challenges in the Lake Chad region, which has been a stronghold for insurgent groups. The Borno State Government's investment in Swamp Boggeys demonstrates the strategic importance of controlling the waterways in counter-terrorism operations.
The successful defense of the Naval base represents a significant victory for Nigerian forces in their continued efforts to secure the northeastern region from terrorist activities.
Military sources indicate that security has been heightened around key installations in the area following the attack.
