Nigerian troops successfully repelled a coordinated attack by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters on a naval base at Lake Chad Fish Dam in Borno State early Tuesday morning.
The insurgents launched their assault around 2:00 a.m., targeting newly acquired swamp bogeys recently procured by the Borno State Government. These specialized vehicles are crucial for waterway clearance operations in the Lake Chad region.
Joint Military Response
Security sources revealed that troops of Operation Hadin Kai engaged the terrorists in a fierce gun battle lasting over two hours through a coordinated land, maritime, and air operation. Naval personnel stationed at the base mounted heavy resistance, with reinforcements quickly arriving from Baga to support the defense.
While the terrorists failed to breach the facility or destroy the targeted swamp bogeys, the attack resulted in the destruction of an ambulance and two other vehicles. Several military personnel reportedly sustained injuries during the encounter.
Ongoing Operations
Following the repelled attack, the air component of Operation Hadin Kai launched pursuit operations along the waterways to eliminate fleeing insurgents and recover abandoned weapons and explosives.
Military authorities have yet to release official casualty figures but confirmed that dozens of attackers were neutralized during the operation. Components for improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were also recovered at the scene, indicating the terrorists had planned a potentially larger attack.
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria's northeast region, where both Boko Haram and ISWAP continue to target military installations and civilian populations despite intensified counter-terrorism efforts.
The Lake Chad region remains a strategic area for military operations against insurgents who have used the vast waterways to establish hideouts and launch attacks across borders with neighboring countries.
