The Adamawa State Commissioner for Environment, Mohammed Sadiq, has firmly denied allegations of orchestrating the arrest of Umar Jada, a prominent government critic popularly known as 'Calculate' in the state.
Calculate, known for his vocal criticism of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri's administration, was arrested following a petition alleging defamatory comments. His detention, ordered by a Magistrate Court, has sparked significant public outcry across the state.
Public Backlash and Allegations
The arrest has generated heated reactions from supporters of Calculate. One supporter, Muzzammil Hassan, expressed outrage, stating: "It's heartbreaking and infuriating to see that in our own country, speaking the truth has become a crime. How can the Adamawa State Government justify arresting an innocent person simply for criticizing bad leadership?"
Calculate and his supporters have pointed fingers at Commissioner Sadiq, particularly after the official had previously ordered the demolition of a property belonging to the critic.
Commissioner's Defense
Addressing journalists at a press briefing in Yola, Commissioner Sadiq categorically denied any involvement in Calculate's arrest. He explained that the demolition of Calculate's property was merely part of a broader urban renewal initiative aimed at reclaiming illegally occupied land in the state capital.
To emphasize the impartiality of the exercise, Sadiq pointed out that even a secretariat of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Yola South Local Government Area was affected by the same initiative.
"Yes, we demolished the PDP office. If a PDP government can bring down its own party secretariat for violating city plans, why should anyone else expect special treatment? This is all about planning. We're cleaning up Yola, not settling scores," the commissioner stated.
The controversy highlights growing tensions between government critics and officials in Adamawa State, raising questions about freedom of expression and the limits of government criticism in the region.
As the situation unfolds, many residents are watching closely to see how the administration will balance its urban development goals with protecting citizens' rights to express dissenting opinions.
