President Bola Tinubu has expressed his sympathy to the people of Benue State following a series of deadly attacks that have claimed numerous lives in recent days.
Speaking during the commissioning of the Greater Abuja Water Supply Network on Monday, the President addressed the situation in Benue, calling for peace and harmony in the troubled region.
"I sympathize with the Benue people. I have spoken to the governor; the leadership and the people of Benue should accept our condolences and try hard, very consciously, to maintain peace and harmony among themselves," Tinubu stated.
Recent Attacks in Benue
Benue State has become a flashpoint of violence in recent days, with armed herders launching deadly attacks on communities. The first major incident occurred in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area, where approximately 200 people were reportedly killed.
The violence continued with another attack on Tse Yange, a Tiv-dominated community in Obi Local Government Area of neighboring Nasarawa State.
These incidents have raised serious concerns about security in the region and prompted calls for immediate government intervention to protect vulnerable communities.
Reactions to the Killings
The Benue killings have sparked reactions from various quarters. Ohanaeze Ndigbo has decried the violence and demanded urgent government action, while social media personality and comedian Sabinus has pleaded with the Nigerian government to intervene in the situation.
In a related development, activist Aisha Yesufu has criticized the President's handling of the security situation, questioning his administration's ability to protect Nigerian citizens.
The President is reportedly planning to visit Benue on Wednesday to assess the situation firsthand, having stated that he would clear his schedule for this purpose.
As the situation continues to evolve, Nigerians await concrete actions from the federal government to address the root causes of these recurring conflicts and prevent further loss of lives.
