The Taraba State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has commended President Bola Tinubu's recent visit to Benue State but emphasized that the visit must translate into concrete action against perpetrators of violence in the region.
In a statement issued to journalists on Friday in Jalingo, the state chairman of CAN, Rev. Fr. Williams Awoshiri, expressed deep concern over the persistent violence that continues to claim innocent lives, including women, children, and the elderly across the region.
Beyond Ceremonial Visits
"It must go beyond a ceremonial show of concern. What Nigerians desperately need at this moment is tangible, decisive, and sustained action to bring an end to these acts of terror," the statement read.
The Christian body described the continued massacre of defenseless Nigerians as "a tragic stain on the conscience of our nation and an indictment on those charged with the responsibility of safeguarding lives."
CAN urged President Tinubu, security chiefs, and all relevant authorities to take urgent and concrete steps to stop the bloodshed, emphasizing that "the killers terrorizing our communities are not greater than the collective strength, intelligence, and resources of the Federal Republic of Nigeria."
Call for Accountability
"Silence, inaction, or lip service is no longer acceptable. The blood of the innocent cries out, and history will remember where each of us stood in these perilous times," CAN cautioned.
The association expressed solidarity with the government and people of Benue State, offering prayers for bereaved families and quick recovery for those injured in the attacks.
"We pray for divine comfort for the bereaved families and quick recovery for the wounded. Enough is enough," Awoshiri declared.
The statement comes amid growing concerns over security challenges in the Middle Belt region, with calls for more proactive measures from the federal government to address the root causes of the persistent violence.
