The Kebbi State Government has released N50 million as relief support to timber merchants affected by last Sunday's fire outbreak at the Kara Timber Market in Birnin Kebbi.
BenriNews had earlier reported that the inferno, which occurred in the early hours of June 9, destroyed several shops and goods worth millions of naira. While no lives were lost in the incident, at least nine traders were confirmed to have suffered significant losses, with damages estimated at approximately N191.7 million.
During his visit to the scene on Sunday, Governor Nasir Idris announced an additional personal donation of N10 million to further support the affected traders. The governor expressed sympathy for the victims and assured them of the government's commitment to helping them rebuild their businesses.
"We understand the significance of this market to our local economy and the livelihoods of many families in Kebbi State. This relief fund is just the first step in our response to this unfortunate incident," Governor Idris stated during his inspection of the damaged facilities.
State authorities have indicated that the government is currently conducting a comprehensive assessment of the full extent of the damage. Based on the findings, additional assistance may be provided to help the affected traders resume their businesses as quickly as possible.
The Kara Timber Market is one of the largest wood product markets in the region, serving as a crucial hub for the construction industry and providing employment for hundreds of local residents.
Local business leaders have welcomed the government's swift response but noted that the total losses far exceed the initial relief package. They have called for additional support measures, including low-interest loans and temporary trading spaces, to help affected merchants recover fully.
