Nigeria's First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has made a passionate appeal to Nigerians to donate blood to save the lives of those in dire need as the world marks the 2025 World Blood Donor Day.
Speaking on the significance of this year's theme, 'Give blood, Give hope: together we save lives', the First Lady emphasized that every drop of donated blood carries a message of hope for patients requiring blood transfusions across the country.
A Global Health Initiative
The World Blood Donor Day, established in 2004 by the World Health Organization (WHO), aims to highlight the critical impact of blood donation on patients' lives, encourage regular donations, and recognize the invaluable contributions of voluntary unpaid blood donors in saving lives globally.
According to a statement by Kwapchi Bata Hamman, Special Assistant Media & ICT to the President (Office of the Vice President), "World Blood Donor Day has become a significant event in global health with various activities and campaigns organized worldwide to promote blood donation."
Commemorative Activities
As part of the commemorative activities, the First Lady participated in the Abuja City Marathon Walk from Millennium Park to Eagle Square. She was represented by Hajiya Nana Shettima, wife of the Vice President, who reinforced the call for Nigerians to donate safe blood.
The event underscores the importance of voluntary blood donation in addressing the persistent shortage of blood in Nigerian hospitals and healthcare facilities, which often leads to preventable deaths during emergencies, childbirth complications, and treatment of various medical conditions.
Health experts continue to emphasize that regular blood donation not only saves lives but also offers health benefits to donors, including reduced risk of heart disease and free health screenings.
