In a significant gesture to combat malaria, the Ike Odoeme Foundation, a non-governmental organization, has donated 3,000 long-lasting treated mosquito nets to pregnant women and children under five in Imo State. The donation was made in commemoration of World Malaria Day 2026, during a presentation event held at the Imo State Ministry of Health in collaboration with the ministry.

Speaking at the event on Monday, the founder of the Foundation, Mr. Ike Odoeme, emphasized the importance of protecting vulnerable groups from malaria. "Under no circumstance should any woman or child die as a result of malaria. The essence of making money is to impact lives and help lift the downtrodden out of financial burden," he stated. He further urged well-meaning individuals to join hands in supporting humanity, adding, "Service to humanity is the best work of life."

Call for Collective Action Against Malaria

The Imo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Chioma Egu, highlighted the persistent challenges in the fight against malaria, including poor utilization of preventive measures, inadequate environmental sanitation, and delayed health-seeking behavior. "These challenges require renewed commitment from all stakeholders," she noted. Reflecting on this year’s theme, ‘Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must,’ Dr. Egu stressed the importance of collective action involving governments, healthcare providers, community leaders, and individuals.

She called on policymakers to sustain political commitment and increase investments in malaria prevention programs. For healthcare providers, adherence to national treatment guidelines, including testing suspected cases with Rapid Diagnostic Tests or microscopy before treatment with Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies (ACTs), was deemed essential. She also urged communities to adopt simple preventive measures like clearing bushy surroundings and eliminating stagnant water to reduce mosquito breeding.
