The Lagos State Government has arrested Mr. Morufudeen Idowu, a 52-year-old returnee from Canada, for allegedly assaulting an officer of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) during an enforcement operation in the Ojota area.
According to a statement released on Friday by Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the incident occurred when Idowu reportedly resisted arrest after unlawfully crossing the expressway. The suspect was subsequently taken into custody at the KAI office in Oshodi.
Commissioner Wahab confirmed that Idowu will face prosecution under applicable Lagos State laws for his actions against the environmental officer.
Multiple Environmental Offenders Apprehended
In a related development, Wahab disclosed that a dawn enforcement operation at Isokoko, near the railway line, resulted in the arrest of 23 individuals. These suspects were allegedly caught dumping refuse directly into drainage channels, a practice the Commissioner identified as a significant contributor to urban flooding in Lagos.
The Commissioner acknowledged the crucial role played by vigilant residents who provided intelligence that led to these arrests, emphasizing the government's commitment to holding environmental offenders accountable through proper legal channels.
Additionally, enforcement teams arrested two suspects for open defecation along Agege Motor Road by the railway line. Eight others were apprehended for open urination in various locations including Allen, Opebi, and Governor's Road in Alausa.
Wahab stated that all suspects are currently in custody and will be charged in accordance with environmental laws governing Lagos State as part of ongoing efforts to maintain sanitation standards across the metropolis.
The Lagos State Government continues to intensify enforcement of environmental regulations to address issues of improper waste disposal and public sanitation violations that affect the quality of life in Nigeria's commercial capital.
