Five individuals were arraigned before an Oshodi Magistrate's Court on Thursday for allegedly dumping refuse into a canal along the Igando-Iba Road Link Bridge in Lagos. The court ordered their remand at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending the next hearing scheduled for July 9.
The defendants—Quassim Jamiu and Ayo Jamiu from Kwara State, Alexander Innocent from Akwa Ibom, Oparinde Taiwo from Ogun State, and Moses Adelowokan from Osun State—were apprehended by operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps in collaboration with security personnel.
According to authorities, the suspects were caught while attempting to dump a large quantity of waste into the canal using a lorry. The arrest is part of a recent enforcement drive by the Lagos State Government aimed at curbing violations of the state's environmental regulations.
Government's Response to Environmental Violations
The incident occurred just 48 hours after the government issued a stern warning to residents and businesses against illegal refuse disposal. Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized the state government's determination to take strong action against those engaging in indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
"The State Government will ensure diligent prosecution of all the arrested people to serve as a deterrence to all those with similar intentions," Wahab stated.
This case highlights Lagos State's ongoing efforts to enforce environmental regulations and maintain cleanliness across the metropolis. The government has recently intensified its campaign against improper waste disposal, with several enforcement operations conducted across various parts of the state.
Environmental experts have repeatedly warned about the dangers of canal pollution, which can lead to flooding during rainy seasons and pose significant public health risks to communities living near these waterways.
