Turkish Super Lig giants Trabzonspor are looking to extend Nigerian forward Anthony Nwakaeme's stay at the club for another season, despite the player being 36 years old.
Nwakaeme, who returned to the Black Sea Storm last summer after a two-year stint in Saudi Arabia with Al-Fahya, has impressed the club's management with his contributions during the 2024/25 campaign.
According to reports from Turkey, Trabzonspor manager Faith Tekke has informed the club's hierarchy of his desire to retain the experienced Nigerian forward, believing his experience and quality will be vital for the team's ambitions next season.
Nwakaeme's Impact Despite Age
Despite concerns about his age, Nwakaeme made 27 appearances across all competitions for Trabzonspor during the 2024/25 season, contributing two goals and five assists. The Nigerian forward also featured in the starting lineup for the Turkish Cup final against Galatasaray, though Trabzonspor ultimately lost the match.
Trabzonspor finished third in the Turkish Super Lig standings for the 2024/25 campaign, behind champions Galatasaray and runners-up Fenerbahce.
Nwakaeme's History with Trabzonspor
This is Nwakaeme's second spell with the Turkish club, having previously played for Trabzonspor between 2018 and 2022. During his first stint, the Nigerian forward was a key player for the team, scoring an impressive 41 goals in 120 league appearances.
His return to the club last summer came after spending two seasons in the Saudi Arabian league with Al-Fahya, and despite being in the twilight of his career, Nwakaeme has shown he still has much to offer at the top level of Turkish football.
Coach Tekke's decision to push for Nwakaeme's retention highlights the value placed on experienced players who can mentor younger talents while still contributing on the pitch.
