Civil society organizations in Osun State embarked on a peaceful protest on Thursday to commemorate the 32nd anniversary of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely believed to have been won by the late Chief MKO Abiola.
The demonstration, organized by the Osun Civil Societies Coalition, aimed to highlight persistent governance issues that have remained unaddressed over the years.
Demands for Better Governance
Emmanuel Olowu, Osun State Chairman for the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights and one of the protest organizers, told BenriNews that the peaceful march was designed to press home several critical demands.
"Our demands include good governance at all levels, free, fair and credible elections, non-negotiable adequate security, affordable and qualitative education, and payment of entitlements to MKO Abiola's family," Olowu stated.
Protest Route
According to the organizers, the protest began at Baba Onisekere Roundabout in Aiyetoro and proceeded to the Old Garage (Freedom Park) area of Osogbo. The march continued through Olaiya Junction before concluding at the Adolak Event Centre along Gbongan-Ibadan Road, Osogbo.
The June 12 Democracy Day commemorates the presidential election that was annulled by the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida, an event widely regarded as a pivotal moment in Nigeria's struggle for democratic governance.
This protest comes amid growing concerns about governance issues across Nigeria, with civil society groups increasingly vocal about the need for accountability and improved service delivery from elected officials.
