Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially declared his intention to contest for Nigeria's presidency in 2027 while reaffirming his commitment to the Labour Party (LP).
Obi made this declaration during a campaign rally in Anambra State where he is currently drumming up support for George Moghalu, the Labour Party's candidate in the upcoming November governorship election.
Speaking predominantly in Igbo language to his supporters, Obi addressed rumors about his political future, stating categorically that he remains a member of the Labour Party with no intentions of defecting.
"Others have a right to run for office. I have not asked anyone not to run for office, but if anyone asks you, tell them I am running for office, and I am the most competent amongst all," Obi declared to the cheering crowd.
This announcement comes amid speculation about potential political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with various political figures positioning themselves for what promises to be a highly contested presidential race.
Obi's declaration is significant as it provides clarity on his political future following his strong showing in the 2023 presidential election, where he emerged as a formidable third-force candidate, particularly resonating with young and urban voters.
Political analysts note that his early declaration might be strategic, allowing him ample time to consolidate his support base and strengthen the Labour Party's structures nationwide ahead of the 2027 electoral contest.
The former Anambra State governor's immediate focus, however, appears to be on helping the Labour Party secure victory in the forthcoming Anambra governorship election, which would significantly boost the party's political credentials.
