Popular socio-political activist, Omoyele Sowore, has declared that he would have taken legal action against President Bola Tinubu if he had been included in the recently released National Award list.
President Tinubu on Thursday released the official list of 102 awardees for the 2025 Democracy Day National Honours. The list comprises Nigerians, both living and dead, who have contributed significantly to the country's democratic journey.
While some Nigerians believe that activists like Sowore should have been included among the awardees, the former presidential candidate made it clear he would have rejected such recognition.
Sowore's Strong Stance
In a post on his official Facebook page on Friday, Sowore stated: "If I were mistakenly included by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his 'National Award' list, I would not only reject and denounce the award but also take definitive legal action for defamation."
This statement comes amid the celebration of Democracy Day, which commemorates Nigeria's return to democratic governance after years of military rule.
Sowore, known for his activism and criticism of government policies, has been a vocal opponent of the current administration. His declaration highlights the deep political divisions that continue to characterize Nigeria's democratic landscape.
BenriNews reports that the 2025 Democracy Day National Honours list has generated mixed reactions from Nigerians, with some questioning the criteria used for selection while others have praised the recognition of certain individuals.
The presidential award ceremony is expected to hold in the coming days as part of activities marking this year's Democracy Day celebrations.
