A Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS-3) student has been arrested in Oju Local Government Area of Benue State for allegedly beating his teacher to death during a dispute over a seized school cap.
The tragic incident occurred on Thursday at UBE Secondary School, Oju Centre, where 16-year-old Friday Ogamude reportedly confronted his teacher, Mr. Oyibe Oyibe, 35, demanding the return of a cap that had been confiscated in May 2025.
According to eyewitnesses, what began as a verbal confrontation quickly escalated into violence when the student allegedly attacked the teacher during their heated exchange. Mr. Oyibe collapsed on the spot following the altercation.
Emergency responders rushed the teacher to Amara Hospital in Oju, where medical personnel pronounced him dead on arrival. The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the General Hospital mortuary in Oju for autopsy.
Police authorities have confirmed the arrest of the teenage suspect and described the incident as "deeply troubling." Law enforcement officials assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway and pledged that justice will be served in this case.
