Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has met with representatives of 15 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to establish protocols for peaceful Democracy Day commemorations scheduled for June 12, including planned protests.
According to a statement issued by the Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, all participating groups at the meeting agreed to prioritize public safety and security during their respective activities.
Half of the organizations present indicated their intention to mark the day with peaceful celebrations, while the remainder planned to hold non-disruptive protests. The protesting CSOs agreed to gather at the Ikeja Under-Bridge and proceed jointly to Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota, which was confirmed as the sole approved location for demonstrations.
"It was agreed that no protests would take place outside the designated venue at Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota. Discussions also focused on ensuring peace, law, and order throughout the Democracy Day event and related activities. The CSOs pledged to brief other non-attending organizations on the meeting's outcomes and encourage compliance with the agreed resolutions," Hundeyin stated.
Security Protocols and Public Safety
The meeting emphasized the importance of adhering to established security protocols to safeguard lives and property across the state. CSOs were advised to ensure their activities remain peaceful and not be infiltrated by miscreants or those seeking to incite disorder.
They were also urged to avoid disruptions to traffic flow, public order, or the lawful celebrations of other citizens. The Lagos Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining adequate security throughout the Democracy Day events and encouraged residents to observe the occasion without fear.
Hundeyin called on the public to remain law-abiding and help preserve the existing peace across the state.
This agreement comes as Nigeria prepares to commemorate Democracy Day, which marks the restoration of democratic governance in the country and honors the legacy of the June 12, 1993 elections.
