Protesters in Bauchi have suspended their planned June 12 Democracy Day demonstrations over fears of possible infiltration and security threats, organizers confirmed on Thursday.

The protest, which was part of a nationwide mobilization by the #TakeItBack Movement across 20 states, was originally scheduled to take place in Bauchi city before security concerns prompted its cancellation.

Nazif Nuhu, the state coordinator of the movement, explained the decision was made following consultations with security agencies. "It has been suspended after a security meeting. There have been serious security threats of infiltration. So, as patriotic citizens, we shouldn't lead by blindness. We put people's safety first. National interest is above other considerations," Nuhu stated.

Security Presence and Wider Context

Despite the suspension, reports indicate that heavy security presence was observed around the designated protest venues in Bauchi, with armed personnel deployed to strategic points throughout the city.

The #TakeItBack Movement, known for its advocacy for good governance and social justice, had planned to use the nationwide Democracy Day protest to highlight grievances including economic hardship, insecurity, and government accountability.

While the Bauchi chapter has suspended its activities, other states may proceed with their planned protests, although no official statement has been issued by the national leadership of the movement at the time of filing this report.

The decision highlights the delicate balance between citizens' right to peaceful protest and security considerations, particularly in a period when Nigeria commemorates its democratic journey.
