Protests have erupted in Nigeria's capital Abuja and commercial hub Lagos as citizens demonstrate against worsening economic conditions and insecurity on Democracy Day, June 12.
In Abuja, demonstrators gathered in the Apo area, chanting solidarity songs and displaying placards despite the deployment of heavily armed security personnel at strategic locations across the Federal Capital Territory. Security forces were positioned at major junctions, the National Assembly, and other key areas in anticipation of the protests.
Similarly, in Lagos, protesters assembled at the Ikeja Underbridge, comprising members of civil society groups and pro-democracy activists. The demonstrators proceeded with their planned action despite early morning security patrols intended to discourage gatherings.
Protesters in both cities carried banners with messages such as "End Hardship Now," "Secure Our Lives," and "Democracy for the People," highlighting the growing frustration among Nigerians over the current economic situation and security challenges.
BenriNews earlier reported that the protests coincided with Nigeria's Democracy Day celebrations, during which President Bola Tinubu was scheduled to address the National Assembly.
Security Response to Protests
The demonstrations occurred despite significant security preparations in both cities. In Lagos, reports indicate that police authorities had previously engaged with civil society organizations to ensure peaceful protests.
The timing of these protests is significant as they come amid growing concerns over inflation, fuel price increases, and persistent security challenges that have affected many Nigerians in recent months.
As the situation develops, authorities continue to monitor the demonstrations while maintaining security presence in affected areas.
