Nigerians angered by the current economic situation in the country have taken to the streets of Lagos to protest against President Bola Tinubu's administration as part of the 2025 Democracy Day celebration.
The protesters, who gathered at the Ikeja Underbridge, expressed their frustrations over various government policies they believe have worsened living conditions across the nation.
Despite the presence of security operatives deployed to maintain order, demonstrators displayed placards with messages such as "Reverse Electricity Tariff Hike" and "No one deserves a death sentence for protesting against hunger," highlighting specific grievances against the current administration.
Police Assure Public Safety
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the ongoing protest but assured the public there was no cause for alarm.
"Adequate security on ground for celebrants and protesters alike. No cause for alarm. Your safety and security remain our priority," Hundeyin stated.
The demonstration comes at a time when many Nigerians are experiencing increased economic pressure following policy changes implemented by the Tinubu administration, including the removal of fuel subsidies and electricity tariff increases.
Similar protests have been reported in other parts of the country, including Osun State, where civil society organizations embarked on a peaceful protest to mark Democracy Day.
The June 12 Democracy Day commemorates the restoration of democratic governance in Nigeria and is typically a day for reflection on the country's democratic journey since the end of military rule.
