The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the appointment of 46 match officials for the upcoming 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), marking the highest number in the tournament's history.
This record figure represents a significant increase from the 40 officials who participated in the 2022 edition of the prestigious biennial competition. The selected officials include referees, assistant referees, and video assistant referees (VAR).
Nigerian Representation
Nigeria's Yemisi Eunice Akintoye stands as the sole Nigerian representative on the shortlist for Morocco 2024. Akintoye, a centre referee, brings substantial experience having officiated in several major competitions including the CAF Women's Champions League, WAFU B Women's Champions League, and WAFU B U-20 Championship.
Tournament Details
The WAFCON 2024 finals will be hosted in Morocco from Saturday, July 5 to Saturday, July 26, 2025. Twelve teams will compete in the tournament, with Nigeria's Super Falcons drawn in Group B alongside Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria.
The Super Falcons, under the guidance of coach Justine Madugu, will be looking to make a strong showing in the competition as they face their group opponents.
This announcement comes as preparations intensify for what promises to be a highly competitive tournament showcasing the best of women's football across the African continent.
