Nigeria's Super Falcons have arrived at their base in Casablanca, Morocco, as they prepare for their opening fixture at the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), BenriNews reports.
The team, led by coach Justine Madugu, is now lodged at the Ibis Casablanca hotel after initially staying at the Novotel Hotel in Mohammedia following their arrival in Morocco last week.
Upon their arrival in the bustling city, the players and officials received an official welcome from representatives of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC). The team wasted no time getting to work, holding their first training session in Casablanca on the same afternoon.
Recent Performance and Tournament Preparation
The Super Falcons enter the tournament with momentum after defeating the Black Queens of Ghana 3-1 in a friendly match on Sunday, which team midfielder Rasheedat Abiodun described as "a perfect morale booster" for the squad.
Nigeria's campaign at WAFCON 2024 will begin this Sunday when they face Tunisia at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium. The match represents an important first step in their quest to reclaim the continental title.
High Expectations for the Tournament
CAF has highlighted the tournament's rising stars, with Nigeria's Rasheedat Abiodun named among five players to watch during the competition. Meanwhile, Tunisia star Houij has acknowledged the quality of the Super Falcons squad ahead of their upcoming clash.
Former Nigerian international Stella Mbachu has backed the Super Falcons to win the title, while forward Rinsola Babajide has expressed her eagerness to secure her maiden silverware with the national team.
The tournament will also feature a new trophy, which was recently unveiled by CAF in Morocco.
