The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning to contractors handling projects in the territory, emphasizing that "looking for my trouble is not good" and urging them to fulfill their promises of timely delivery.
Wike made these remarks on Wednesday during the commissioning of the Arterial Road N16 (Shehu Shagari Way) from Ring Road 1 (Nnamdi Azikiwe Way) to Arterial Road N20 (Wole Soyinka Way) and other roads in the Katampe district of the FCT by President Bola Tinubu.
"This job was awarded by the Federal council in September and we flagged off in October and I told the contractor, I don't want to hear abandonment," Wike stated firmly.
The minister emphasized his no-excuses policy regarding project execution: "If I pay you during the rainy season you must work during the rainy season; if I pay you during the dry season you must work in the dry season. I don't want to hear that the rain was too much. Return the money so that we will keep it after the rain, we will pay you."
Building Confidence in Contractors
Wike admitted he was initially skeptical about CGC, the contractor handling the project, but gained confidence after witnessing their work on the presidential Villa interchange to Asokoro, which was completed despite being awarded under a previous administration.
"I started having confidence in them. I told them, are you sure Mr. President will commission this project during his second year in office? They said yes, should I include it as part of the projects to be commissioned? They said yes," Wike recounted.
The minister then delivered his pointed warning: "I said to look for my trouble is not good – now you have made a promise, you have to keep to the promise."
The commissioning of these roads marks another milestone in the ongoing infrastructure development in the Federal Capital Territory under the current administration.
