England head coach Thomas Tuchel has pointed to defensive lapses as the primary reason for his team's 3-1 defeat against Senegal in Tuesday night's international friendly at City Ground.

The Three Lions took an early lead through Harry Kane in the seventh minute but failed to maintain their advantage as Senegal mounted an impressive comeback.

Ismaila Sarr, Habib Diarra, and Cheikh Sabaly all found the net for the West African side, securing a historic victory that marks Senegal as the first African nation to defeat England in an international match.

Defensive Concerns Highlighted

Speaking after the match, Tuchel expressed his disappointment with the result and specifically highlighted defensive shortcomings in his assessment.

"Yeah of course, it is a disappointing result," Tuchel told TV Sport. "We conceded the first two goals – very easy goals, we need to defend better."

Despite the defeat, the England manager found some positives in his team's response after falling behind.

"The reaction was good after we were down. We suddenly were more active, more free, more fluent, more aggressive. We had big chances to equalise," he added.

Senegal's Historic Achievement

The victory represents a significant milestone for Senegalese football, as they become the first African nation to defeat England in international competition. The result will likely boost their confidence ahead of upcoming competitive fixtures.

For England, the defeat raises questions about their defensive organization as they continue preparations under Tuchel's leadership.

The match serves as a reminder that despite England's status as one of football's elite nations, the gap between traditional powers and emerging football nations continues to narrow on the international stage.
