Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has dismissed the necessity of opposition coalitions forming against President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections, stating that Nigerians are more concerned with economic revival than political alliances.
Speaking from his country home in Igbere on Tuesday, the Abia North senator emphasized that what Nigerians truly need is leadership focused on economic recovery and food security, not political maneuvers.
"People are saying that they are building coalition. That is not what the people want," Kalu stated. "The masses need concrete evidence that the economy can be rebuilt, that there would be food on the table of every Nigerian. President Bola Tinubu is addressing the hunger in the land."
The former Abia State governor expressed confidence that Tinubu's achievements would secure his reelection regardless of opposition coalitions. While acknowledging the economic hardships facing many Nigerians, Kalu maintained that the President's naira stabilization initiatives and other economic programs are already addressing these challenges.
Clarification on Recent Political Moves
Kalu also addressed speculation surrounding his recent visit to Governor Alex Otti, clarifying that it was a private arrangement rather than an endorsement for the 2027 elections. He dismissed claims that the visit could lead to his suspension from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Regarding his relationship with House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, the senator denied any rift between them. However, he challenged the representative to clarify his intentions regarding the 2027 Abia State gubernatorial race.
The senator also highlighted infrastructure challenges in Abia North, particularly the theft of electricity cables and public property. He assured constituents that he is working with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to restore power to affected communities in the zone.
As political positioning for the 2027 elections begins to take shape, Kalu's comments reflect growing debates within Nigerian political circles about whether opposition parties can effectively challenge the incumbent through coalition building.
