Six men have been killed and three women seriously injured after triggering a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) believed to have been planted by the Lakurawa terrorist group in Sokoto State.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in Gwabro village, Tangaza Local Government Area, during Eid-el-Kabir celebrations when victims were visiting relatives in nearby communities.

How The Incident Occurred

According to local sources, the victims were walking from Gwabro to the neighboring Zurmuku community as part of traditional Eid visits when they encountered the explosive device.

"They were simply unfortunate. These innocent victims were walking from Gwabro to the nearby Zurmuku community when they stumbled upon the device. Perhaps unaware of its nature, they may have touched it, which resulted in the explosion," a source explained.

ASP Ahmed Rufai, spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command, confirmed the casualties and noted that the three injured women are currently receiving treatment at Tangaza General Hospital.

Rising Concerns About Lakurawa Terrorists

The incident has heightened concerns about the growing threat posed by the newly formed Lakurawa terrorist group, which has been operating across Sokoto and Kebbi states.

Alhaji Garzali Raka, Special Adviser on Security Matters to the Tangaza Local Government chairman, confirmed that those who died in the explosion have been buried according to Islamic rites.

This attack comes amid reports that security forces have been working to dismantle the Lakurawa terror network in the region, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria's northwestern states.
