The Gwer West Local Government Council in Benue State has implemented an immediate ban on scrap iron dealers, commonly known as "iron condemn dealers," across the entire local government area due to security concerns.

The Executive Chairman, Hon. Ormin Torsar Victor, issued the directive as part of the council's comprehensive strategy to address escalating security challenges and restore peace in the region.

Strict Enforcement Measures

According to the chairman, anyone caught engaging in scrap iron trading, particularly those transporting materials from conflict-affected areas or townships, will face arrest and prosecution in accordance with the law.

In a statement signed by Timothy Ajieje, the chairman's Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, residents were urged to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious scrap-related activities to security authorities.

"This measure is aimed at protecting lives and property. We call on all security agencies and members of the community to support the strict enforcement of this ban," the statement emphasized.

Broader Security Context

The ban comes amid growing security concerns in Benue State, where communities have recently experienced various forms of unrest. Just last month, armed bandits reportedly attacked a Benue community, injuring residents and looting property.

Governor Hyacinth Alia has previously described the security situation in the state as critical, stating that "Benue is under siege" and characterizing the ongoing violence as terrorism rather than mere farmer-herder conflicts.

The Miyetti Allah cattle breeders association has also raised concerns, alleging that their cattle are being rustled and killed in the state, further complicating the security dynamics in the region.

Local security experts suggest that scrap metal dealers have sometimes been implicated in the theft of critical infrastructure, including metal components from bridges, electrical installations, and other public facilities, potentially contributing to the security challenges facing the region.

The Gwer West Local Government's decision represents one of several measures being implemented across Benue State to address the multifaceted security challenges facing communities.
