Gunmen launched a coordinated attack on a local vigilante facility in Umunze community, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, early Thursday morning, resulting in the death of one vigilante operative.
The facility, part of the Agunaechemba vigilante network established by the Anambra State Government, was targeted in the pre-dawn hours. During the attack, the assailants set five operational vehicles ablaze and partially burned the security office.
Details of the Attack
According to eyewitness accounts, the heavily armed attackers overwhelmed the vigilantes stationed at the facility. While one operative sustained fatal injuries during the ensuing gun battle, others managed to escape with their lives.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear as investigations continue. Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, has confirmed the incident and called on the public to provide any information that could aid in the investigation.
Police Response
Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has strongly condemned the attack and emphasized the critical need for community support to bring the perpetrators to justice.
A police-led joint security force has now taken control of the scene and is working diligently to ensure those responsible are held accountable. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities promising to communicate further developments as more information becomes available.
