The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed the recovery of five additional bodies from communities devastated by last Thursday's flash flood in Mokwa local government area, bringing the total death toll to 158.
According to a statement signed by NSEMA's Public Relations Officer, Hussani Ibrahim, four bodies were recovered on Monday evening, while the fifth was found late Tuesday from Tiffin-Madza and Anguwan Hausawa communities.
NSEMA Director General, Abdullahi Baba Arab, explained that the recovery process faced delays due to necessary verification procedures at burial sites. "This recovery was delayed as we went for verification at the burial sites. It was confirmed alongside Sarkin Hausawa," Arab stated.
The agency emphasized that the updated death toll has been verified jointly by NSEMA and the Red Cross, highlighting the devastating impact of the disaster on the affected communities.
This incident comes amid growing concerns about flooding in Niger State, with Amnesty International recently calling for urgent action as flood-related deaths reportedly exceed 200 across the state.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has also extended condolences to the Mokwa community as they grapple with the aftermath of this catastrophic event.
BenriNews will continue to monitor the situation as recovery and relief efforts progress in the affected areas.
