The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commenced an investigation into the fatal road accident that claimed the lives of 22 Kano state athletes and officials who were returning from the 2025 National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.

The tragic incident occurred in Dakatsalle as the contingent was making their way back to Kano after representing the state at the national sporting competition.

FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, represented by Assistant Corps Marshal Ahmed Umar, the Zonal Commanding Officer in Kaduna, disclosed this during a condolence visit to the Kano State Government House.

"Road traffic crashes don't just happen; they usually occur because of human error, or environmental reasons or a mechanical failure," Umar stated during the visit.

The FRSC official assured the state government that findings from the comprehensive investigation would be shared once the probe is concluded.

Kano State Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who received the FRSC delegation, expressed gratitude for the agency's prompt intervention following the incident.

The accident has sent shockwaves through the sporting community and the entire Kano State, with several political figures and organizations extending condolences to the families of the deceased and the state government.

An NNPP chieftain reportedly described the athletes' deaths as avoidable, attributing the tragedy to poor road conditions, highlighting ongoing concerns about infrastructure and road safety across the country.

The neighboring Jigawa State has also reacted to the incident, offering condolences to the Kano government and the bereaved families.

This tragedy comes at a time when the nation is also grappling with other incidents, including the death of a Plateau pilgrim in Makkah during Hajj, as mentioned in related reports.
