The Abia State Ministry of Health has issued an urgent health advisory to residents following a diphtheria outbreak in neighboring Imo State, officials announced on Monday.
Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists after the weekly executive council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti. The advisory comes as part of proactive measures to prevent the spread of the infectious disease into Abia State.
"The government is urging parents to ensure their children are vaccinated against diphtheria, while adults who are uncertain about their vaccination status should also get immunized," Kanu stated.
The commissioner emphasized the importance of vigilance, advising parents to monitor their children for symptoms of diphtheria and to report any suspected cases to local health authorities immediately. He also called on stakeholders to help disseminate this critical health information throughout the state.
River Blindness Eradication
In a positive development, Kanu announced that the Federal Ministry of Health has declared Abia State free of river blindness after 30 years of mass drug administration to control the disease. This marks a significant public health achievement for the state.
Traffic Enforcement Measures
The commissioner also revealed that the State Ministry of Transport has established an enforcement team to crack down on drivers who drive against traffic (one-way driving). Vehicles of offenders will be impounded, and defaulters will face heavy fines.
"The enforcement of these rules will be very stringent. Offenders will be prosecuted and fined very heavily, and when you cannot pay your fines, your vehicle will be impounded," Kanu warned.
He further stated that vehicles whose owners fail to pay the required fines will eventually be auctioned by the state government. The measure aims to reduce the rising cases of accidents caused by drivers who disregard traffic rules.
Residents are encouraged to comply with traffic regulations and to support the government's efforts to maintain public health and safety across the state.
